About

About A Cup of Sugar

A free community pantry exchange where neighbors ask for what they need and share what they can spare, so no ingredient is missing and no neighbor is alone.

What this app does

A Cup of Sugar is a neighborhood pantry exchange. You can post an offer when you have more than you can use — a bag of lemons, half a sack of rice, a loaf you won't finish — or post a request when you're one ingredient short of a meal. Listings appear in a feed and on a map so you can see what's close by, and neighbors reach each other through in-app chat to arrange a hand-off on a porch or a street corner. There's also a community forum for sharing recipes and swapping kitchen tips.

Who it's for

Anyone with a kitchen and neighbors. Home cooks, gardeners with a zucchini problem, people who bake more than they can eat, and families stretching a grocery budget. It's built for people who would rather knock on a door than let good food go to waste — and it works best street by street, because the whole point is that help is close enough to walk to.

Who builds it

A Cup of Sugar is built and looked after by the same neighbors who use it. It isn't a company, a startup or a delivery service — there's no staff, no investors and nothing for sale. A small group of volunteers maintains the app, answers messages, and steps in when something gets reported. No money ever changes hands between neighbors, and there are no ads, fees or trackers anywhere in the app.
